Isabela launches 24th annual homage to Gardel

On Monday, a delegation from the Legislature in Buenos Aires visited this small northcoast town to recognize the bonds that tie the seaside community to the large Argentina capitol. Argentine deputy Alejandro García sent his greetings through Bárbara García, cultural advisor to the Legislature, who met the press to offer details of the event.

Carlos Gardel was known around the world, but his re-incarnation this week in Isabela is surely a first. Tango lovers, Argentinians and friends of Argentineans will come together Friday in the Isabela Tango Fest 2010 to dance to his immortal music.

Mayor Carlos Delgado Altieri thanked the legislature and said the interest in tango demonstrates a new cultural exchange between both cultures.

“We recognize the value of the music of Carlos Gardel and what it signifies for the people of Isabel, for Puerto Ricans and for Argentinians who live in Puerto Rico, so we join in this effort every year,” said the mayor. The Buenos Aires Legislature will install a plaque on the bust on the bust of Gardel in Isabela.

They also issued a bulletin calling Isabela a place of “cultural interes for the celebration of the 24th festival dedicated to the Tango.

The “Isabela Tango Fest 2010, A Meeting with Gardel” is organized annually by La Peña del Tango José “Pin” Grafals and the city, to honor the Argentinian singer and his legacy, 75 years after his death.

The Festival will be held in the Manuel Corchado y Juarbe in Isabela on Friday and Saturday. The event will be dedicaated to Architect Jorge Oliver Piñeiro, who designed the pedestal and area where Gardel’s bust stands. They will also render tribute to Antonio Moreno Caldero,educator, poet and historian from Corazal who has written extensively on the tango.

Friday’s program will begin at 10 a.m. with the placing of the floral offering in front of the bust of Gardel, on the corner of the street which is named after him.

Afterwards, there will be a singing of tangos and recitals of poetry in his honor. There will also be art exhibits and free tango classes in the Manuel Corchado y Juarbe Plaza.

At 7 p.m., there will be a ceremony and a show of dances and songs, featuring the tango and milonga.

On Saturday, activities will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a Gardel Film Festival, consisting of four films.

At 1:30 p.m. in the Justo Méndez Cabrera Amphitheater a talk on “Gardel the Filmmaker” will be offered by his biographer, the local cartoonist Arturo Yépez Pottier.

At 8 p.m., there will be a Tango Gala, which includes a show.

Carlos Gardel es conocido alrededor de todo el mundo, pero la de Isabela esta semana fue su primera reencarnación. Los amantes del tango, los argentinos y los amigos de los argentinos se reunirán este viernes en el Festival de Tango Isabela 2010 para bailar su música inmortal.

"Reconocemos el valor de la música de Carlos Gardel y lo que significa para la gente de Isabela, para los portorriqueños y argentinos que viven en Puerto Rico, por eso nos unimos en este esfuerzo cada año", dijo el alcalde. La Legislatura de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires instalará una placa en el busto de Gardel en Isabela.

El "Festival Isabela 2010, un encuentro con Gardel" es organizado anualmente por la Peña del Tango José "Pin" Grafals y la ciudad, en honor al cantante argentino y su legado, 75 años después de su muerte.

El festival tendrá lugar en el Manuel Corchado y Juarbe en Isabela, el viernes y sábado. El evento estará dedicado al arquitecto Jorge Oliver Piñeiro, que diseñó el pedestal y el área donde se alza el busto de Gardel. También se rendirá tributo a Antonio Moreno Caldero, educador, poeta e historiador de Corazal que ha escrito extensamente sobre tango.

El programa del viernes comienza a las 10 am, con la colocación de la ofrenda floral frente al busto de Gardel, en la esquina que lleva su nombre.
Luego se cantarán tangos y recitarán poesías en su honor. También habrá exhibiciones de arte y clases de tango gratuitas en el Manuel Corchado y Juarbe Plaza.

A las 19 habrá una ceremonia y un show de baile y canciones, incluyendo tango y milonga.

El sábado las actividades comenzarán a las 9:30 am, con un Festival de Películas de Gardel que constará de 4 títulos.

A las 13:30, en el Anfiteatro Justo Méndez Cabrera, se ofrecerá una charla sobre "Gardel el realizador de películas", a cargo de su biógrafo, el caricaturista local Arturo Yépez Pottier.

A las 20, habrá una Gala de Tango, que incluirá un show.
